Psalm 76: Fear

In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war. Selah Glorious are you, more majestic than the mountains full of prey. The stouthearted were stripped of their spoil; they sank into sleep; all the men of war were unable to use their hands. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? From the heavens you uttered judgment; the earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Selah Surely the wrath of man shall praise you; the remnant of wrath you will put on like a belt. Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them; let all around him bring gifts to him who is to be feared, who cuts off the spirit of princes, who is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

Psalms 76:1‭-‬12 ESV

Do you know God? If not, would you like to? Do you know God’s knowable? One of the main ways we get to know God is through His word the Bible, through which we read of how glorious He is.

In God’s word we read of His mighty deeds in times past- how He destroyed Pharoah’s army for example when He delivered His people from Egypt. Because God did that, we can have confidence that if we put our confidence in Him, He will deliver us from all our enemies and grant us eternal life. He has promised, and He is faithful.

God saves the humble and humbles the proud oppressors. He is a fearful God to those who oppose Him. But to us who know Him, we don’t need to be afraid because He loves us.

It seems contradictory, but if we don’t fear God, we need to, because He will hold us to account. On the other hand if we do fear God, we don’t need to be afraid, because God-who-is-fearful is the God who loves us. He gave of Himself for us, to deliver us from all that is fearful, including His wrath at our sins.

Our response should be to praise the Lord. We should promise ourselves and give of ourselves to Him. He cuts off mighty men like an American military drone, therefore rulers ought to fear Him.

“Oh Lord our God, may we rightfully fear You as we ought, for You are great and greatly to be praised. May we make our peace with You through Jesus’ blood, in His name, amen”
