Psalm 75: Equity

We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds. “At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity. When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn; do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.'” For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another. For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs. But I will declare it forever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob. All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

We give thanks to God because He’s near in spirit and in truth. We remind ourselves of all the wonderful things He’s done. He’s going to judge rightly.

If we’re proud, we would do well to fear God’s punishment, because He humbles the arrogant. But if we’re humble we can look forward to His judgement, because the meek will inherit the earth. So we’d do well to humble ourselves before the Almighty.

God has a cup of wrath that the wicked will have to drain down to the dregs. There’s no need to though, because Jesus willingly bore that cup on our behalf. So if we trust in Him, we don’t have to drink it.

We can sing to the Lord forever for His great salvation. He’ll cut off every evildoer. But every repentant saint will be uplifted by Him.

“Oh God of Jacob, thank You for Your mercy to repentant sinners like us and Your justice to unrepentant evildoers. In Jesus’ name, amen”
